WHY BUY A VEHICLE FROM PARAGUAY?
Paraguayan plates are simply the easiest to manage in South America, whether you are buying, selling or crossing borders. No other plates could be transferred locally or remotely in such a short time with so few requirements and documentation.
In Paraguay it is easier for a foreigner (documentation wise) to do a title transfer than a local, the fact is that due to tax regulations and local laws, a foreigner is required less paperwork than a local to complete a title transfer. With our services you can have the title and documentation required to travel in seven days.
The amount and variety of vehicles in Paraguay is impressive, while the prices are very competitive compared to other South American countries
The strategic geographical location is perfect as a starting point for an adventure around South America, you can go North, South, East or West and at any time of the year due to the mild winters in the area.
Whether you are into mountains, beaches, rain forests, prairies, salt flats, waterfalls or deserts, Paraguay is the idyllic country to begin your trip.
Few countries have had so little foreign influence as Paraguay, brimming with rich culture and traditions, amazing people, unique landscape and wildlife, which combined with a fascinating history make more than a compelling case to visit the country. Simply put, few countries will offer such an authentic travel experience.
WHAT TYPE OF VEHICLES ARE AVAILABLE IN PARAGUAY?
You will most likely find anything you are looking for vans, crossovers, SUVs and 4x4s of all sizes are readily and plentifully available, manual or automatic, diesel or petrol, 4wd or 2wd.
Grey areas in the law allow the importation of any make, year and type of vehicle with practically no restrictions. This is the reason why Paraguay (aside from the vehicles imported by the official dealerships) has the largest number of Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) imports in South America, vehicles that were sold exclusively in Japan (right hand drive) which are imported and converted to left hand drive after they arrive.
The number of 4x4s is simply staggering, people use them as cars and have done so for many years now. You will see a considerable number of highly sought after 4x4s such as Land Cruisers 60, 80, 100 and 200 series and Nissan Patrols, GQs and GUs, also many Toyota Prados, Mitsubishi Pajeros and Nissan Pathfinders/Terranos.
Pick ups are everywhere, Toyota Hiluxes and Tacomas, Nissan Frontiers/Navarras and Mitsubishi Tritons/L200 are available in large numbers as well as VW Amaroks and Isuzu Dmax among others.
You will also find plenty of Nissan Xtrails, Toyota Rav4s, Honda CRVs, Suzuki Vitaras, Samurais and Jimnys as well as well as crossovers from Hyundai and Kia.
Although there are many types and brands of 4x4s and SUVs, Japanese ones still rule in the country, with a large number of them on the road. The demand for Japanese built vehicles has always been high, and although Toyota Land Cruisers were built in Colombia and Hiluxes in Argentina (to mention a couple) only Japanese built ones were imported by the official dealership in Paraguay as long as these vehicles were produced in Japan. The same could be said about the Nissan Patrol.
You will also find 4×4 vans such as the Mitsubishi Delica, Toyota HIace (4×4 with low transfer case as well as permanent 4wd ones), Toyota Lite Ace, Regius and similar, Nissan Homy/Caravan as well as larger vans such as Mercedes Sprinters and Fiat Ducatos and Peugeot Boxers. If you are after something bigger there are also mini buses such as the Toyota Coaster, Nissan Civilian and Mitsubishi Rosa.
DO I NEED 4X4?
Those that have travelled with 2wd vehicles will say it isn’t necessary, those who have travelled with 4wd vehicles will highly recommend it. There are reasonable arguments for 4wd and 2wd vehicles, I have personally travelled with both on several occasions and would recommend people to select a 4×4/4wd vehicle if possible.
For most roads in South America 4×4 isn’t necessary and it is a fact that 2wd vehicles are lighter, more fuel efficient, simpler and require smaller less expensive tires.
You won’t NEED 4X4 if you plan to travel mostly on paved roads or nice dirt roads, unless it rains. It is truly surprising how fast things can escalate for the worse in a nice dirt road or trail after even modest rain.
More importantly, although rarely mentioned, it should be emphasized that 4wd is a safety feature.
4wd isn’t useful only on extremely rough terrain, even on dry asphalt or dirt road, a 4wd and 4×4 vehicle respectively offer better grip, traction and maneuverability than a 2wd vehicle, making a 4wd much safer.
On 4×4 vehicles (with hi/lo transfer case) you engage 4×4 high as soon as you leave the asphalt (that’s its purpose), the difference in grip and responses to steering inputs is very noticeable, highly diminishing the risks of accidents. The same applies to permanent 4wd vehicles both on and off road.
4wd vehicles also have higher ground clearance (invaluable on South American roads) and their suspension and steering components are more robust and durable than on 2wd vehicles.
Weather complications and safety aside, 4×4 offers flexibility and freedom.
When out in the open, the difference between an OK, a good and a great camping spot is 4wd. You can get far away from the road, where you won’t be seen, and have a quieter safer night.
There are also many amazing places in South America reachable only with 4×4 vehicles but aren’t popular with travelers, making them in my view very appealing.
Few things are more rewarding and satisfying than reaching and spending time in places where not many people have been.
If used as intended and where intended, 4×4 will provide you with a totally different travel experience.
WHAT DO I NEED TO BUY A VEHICLE FROM PARAGUAY?
Proof you are a non tax paying foreigner (takes about 30 minutes at the tax office) and your passport
No taxes are paid by foreigners when purchasing a vehicle.
HOW LONG DOES THE TITLE TRANSFER TAKE?
With our services the title transfer could take only 7 days (with the Fast Title transfer option), while a normal title transfer usually takes approximately a month, these are the steps:
1 You select the vehicle you wish to purchase
2 Sign a Purchase Contract (USD 30) and pay the seller at a Public Notary’s office. You also pay the Notary 50% of the title transfer fee at this moment to initiate the transfer process. The cost of the title transfer varies according to the price, type, and model of the vehicle (hence the lowest possible value is declared), but it normally costs around USD 240 and USD 300
3 Obtain the non tax payer waiver at the tax office (no cost)
4 Go to any Municipality in or around Asuncion with the vehicle to obtain the Habilitacion or Registration (aprox. USD 35 depending on the price, type and model of the vehicle)
5 Finally the vehicle must be taken to a Verification Plant where it is inspected. They provide you with a verification report which is taken to the Notary .
6 Collect the title and Cedula Verde from the Notary’s office once it is ready and pay the rest of the title transfer fee.
With our All Inclusive Package we do all the documentation for you
WHAT ARE THE NOTARIES FEES FOR A TITLE TRANSFER?
The more expensive the vehicle, the more the title transfer costs by law, this is why it is customary to declare the lowest possible value in order to pay a lower transfer fee. Having said this, expect to pay between USD240 to USD300 in title transfer fees.
WHAT IS THE COST OF A FAST TITLE TRANSFER?
The Public Notary charges a fee of USD235 to complete the title transfer process in 7 days. The regular process takes about a month.
WHAT ARE THE PAYMENT METHODS AVAILABLE?
The preferred method is cash when buying a vehicle, the fastest and most efficient way to obtain cash is through Western Union or similar. Another option is an international bank transfer but this is a little more complex, takes a few days and it is subject to taxes
CAN I CROSS BORDERS WITH A PARAGUAYAN A PLATED VEHICLE AND WHAT DOCUMENTS ARE REQUIRED?
Yes, there are no limitations or hassles crossing any borders with Paraguayan plates, as long as the border is open, you will cross it.
You will need the vehicle’s document, the Cedula Verde (basically a credit card size version of the title) if the title is in your name. If the title is not on your name you will need an apostilled Driving Permission signed by the title holder, and the Cedula Verde.
You will also need the mandatory international insurance.
CAN I RENT A VEHICLE IN PARAGUAY AND CROSS BORDERS WITH IT?
Absolutely, with an apostilled driving permission you will be able to cross borders trouble free.
MUST I RETURN THE VEHICLE TO PARAGUAY BY A CERTAIN DATE? ARE THERE ANY TIME RESTRICTIONS?
No, there are simply no laws requiring you to return the vehicle to Paraguay for any reasons.
CAN I SELL A PARAGUAYAN PLATED VEHICLE OUTSIDE OF PARAGUAY?
Yes, with our Remote Transfer Services you can have the title transferred to the new owner without being physically present in Paraguay.
Off-road Camper experience
Esteban has been an incredible partner since 2017 when he first helped me purchase and transfer the title of my Mitsubishi Delica.
From fitting it out for overland adventures to expertly handling storage and repairs through the challenging COVID years, his dedication and meticulous attention to detail have been outstanding. Esteban is, without a doubt, the most meticulous and knowledgeable Overlander I’ve met. I highly recommend his services for anyone looking for reliable, expert help with their vehicle needs.
A true professional!
Where can I buy a car in South America?
The easiest way for EU citizens is to buy a car in EU including French Guayana and Suriname. In all other countries, buying a car without a permanent residence permit is impossible – except Chile and Paraguay!
I found was I am looking for in Paraguay.
With its location in the heart of South America, it is ideally situated for an expedition in any direction. And the laws are very loose. I need an address in Paraguay when registering a car, but it doesn´t bother anyone if it´s a hotel where I´ve only stayed once. And no one checks that either.
Esteban, who buyes, sells, restores vehicles and also takes care of the bureaucracy, is ideal help here. He can be contacted with WhatsApp +595 991 214 682
I’m super grateful to have found Esteban to help me purchase a 4×4 for overlanding in South America.
I wouldn’t have even tried to navigate the logistics and paperwork of purchasing a vehicle as a foreigner, but Esteban was a godsend and helped every step of the way. He is not a mechanic but has a vast wealth of knowledge about the different vehicle types and capabilities and condition of the motor.
He visited cars for sale that I selected to inspect, and turned down the first 4 we saw due to being in poor shape. When we found one that was in good shape, he took it to a mechanic to get it checked and we decided to purchase. Then, he organised all the paperwork, he has a notary contact who can get the registration expedited from 1 month to 1 week (although this does cost a few hundred euro). Then he helped by getting some preventive maintenance work done with his local contacts to get the vehicle in tip top condition for the trip. He helped me find supplies for camping. He even took me to an off road area in Paraguay to teach me some of the basics of off-roading.
I have now left Paraguay on my trip but Esteban has been available for help and all my questions, and if I need any spare parts he will send them to wherever I am.
Super grateful for this service to make my trip of a lifetime possible!
