Personal details about me

Although I was born in Asuncion, Paraguay, I lived many years abroad and it wasn’t until my thirties that I got to explore this continent in some detail.

Since I could remember, I was always fascinated by cars and 4x4s, and I had a very large number of vehicles over the years with which I learn a lot, until I eventually decided to open my auto repair shop in 2008.

Although I am not a mechanic, I acquired an immense amount of knowledge in regards to vehicles during these years,  which would be invaluable in the future when I started searching for an overland vehicle and eventually travelling.

I remember very clearly the rainy winter day in which a couple of nomads travelling around the continent came to my shop to have their Land Rover serviced, which reignited this eagerness to travel in me which simply wasn’t there since my teenage years.

My guiding principles

For the longest time I dreamed about an epic adventure around South America but in  2014 when I set out  to do so, I realized it wasn’t necessarily easy:

  • Do I really need a vehicle?
  • Which type?
  • Would I be able to easily cross borders?
  • What documentation do I need?
  • What do I do with the vehicle after I finish my trip?

Lots of research helped me select a Mitsubishi Delica 4×4, an amazing overlanding  vehicle, with plates from Paraguay, which I later came to realize are the easiest to manage in South America.Since then I have been fortunate enough to embark on  multiple trips, each time learning a little more about different countries and cultures,  simply falling in love with this amazing continent and its people.

My name is Esteban C. Schupmann and I live in Asuncion, Paraguay, city from which I have started some memorable adventures around South America, travelling by myself, with friends, with my girlfriend and eventually our children, in different vehicles, each suited for the type of trip and  growing number of occupants.

Over the years and after covering tens of thousands of kilometers, I devoted myself to find the ultimate overland vehicle, traveling with:

  • Toyota Land Cruisers,
  • Nissan Patrols,
  • pick ups with removable campers (truck campers),
  • large vans,
  • pop top vans,
  • small motor homes and others,

to eventually realize that the perfect vehicle simply doesn’t exist.

What I did gain a lot of information and knowledge on different types of vehicles, engines and transmissions, interior lay outs,

  • water and solar systems,
  • suspension set ups,
  • 4×4 and
  • traction control systems,

and many other key aspects of vehicle based travels.

Here you find my checklists as pdf.

I became passionate about overlanding and genuinely couldn’t keep my mind from thinking about travels, spots to visit, routes, terrain and vehicles until I decided to help other travelers find their ideal vehicle to travel around SA.

This is how SudameriCampers was born, with the foremost intention of assisting people to select and  buy  or rent the most suitable vehicle with a fast, easy and seamless documentation process that would allow them to have the most carefree experience when traveling around South America.
